Today’s Tuesdays on the Run topic is what advice would you give to beginner runner you? I’m linking up with Erika, Marcia, and Patty to offer some pearls of wisdom to our beginner selves.

My dad is a runner. He’s run his share of marathons, NYC a couple times, Bay to Breakers, and others.  Due to certain father-daughter relationship clichés, I was never going to be a runner.  Then my sister started training for and ran her first runDisney race.  I had to do one for myself, due to certain sisterly competition and desire for some being of my own.  I started training for the 2012 Princess Half Marathon. I was a new mom looking for a way to shed some baby weight and still eat like I was pregnant.  I was training but not taking it seriously. We were like 2 months out and I was like there is no way I am ready for this. I deferred.

I’d tell this new mom:

Running is good for your mental health.

To listen to Jeff. (Galloway, that is. His half marathon app is my training partner)

Trust Yourself.

You can’t eat all the food. You can eat most of it, but long runs aren’t an excuse to binge eat.

Your girls will be proud of you whether you finish first or last.

You will come to love running and will be planning to run a marathon (or 2 or 3).

I completed the 2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon, what I thought would be my one and only half marathon ever.  I never would have finished if it weren’t for my sister. She has since stopped running and I am just getting hooked.

4 half marathons later I am starting to think about running my first full marathon next year.  Once running gets its claws in you it’s hard to get out of its grasp.

Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

  1. Glad you finally got to run that disney half! I trained for the princess half marathon several years ago and said I was one and done too! Turns out I ran 7 more half marathons! I then trained for a full and said I was one and done for sure! Turns out, I ran another one! So yea, you never can tell where this will lead you!

    1. I ran my 4th Half this past weekend. I’ve done the WDW half and Princess twice. I’m doing Tinkerbell next month. I’m planning my first full for next fall and I already know it won’t be the only one. I have NYC and The Dopey Challenge on my bucket list!
